How to Sprout Quinoa with Ease

I am always happy to receive questions from my Power of Food fans. Here is a recent one about sprouting quinoa.

My intention with sharing these questions is to make it easier for you to live each day abundantly happy and healthy through LOVE.

Question

Adam, if you could detail for me how to sprout quinoa I would really be grateful for it. How long do you soak it? and so on. The tails of our quinoa seem to be coming of for some reason. Where to you get your quinoa for sprouting? All best……..Liana

Adam’s Response

Hello Liana

Thank you very much for you question. I am excited to hear you are trying to sprout quinoa. It is such an amazing source of protein and a very healthy carbohydrate. It’s a great addition to a vibrant lifestyle.

I don’t use any special sprouting quinoa. I always buy organic quinoa from my local grocery store and rinse it before use.

How I store my sprouting quinoa during the day

I soak my quinoa for 6 hours and then rinse it off. I then put it into a sprouting jar (glass jar with punched holes in the lid) and rinse it 2 times a day for 48 hours. I always leave it resting on my kitchen counter top in a way the remaining liquid can continue to drain out.

Before bed I like to place my jars in a dark dry place at room temp overnight (my kitchen cupboard works best).

It begins to sprout within 24 hours. If you sprout it too long, it begins to have a sharp lemony taste. Not nearly as enjoyable to eat. Usually around the 40 hour mark is when it seems to be ideal for consumption, but anywhere from 35-48 is good.

Here are 2 ways I like to use my sprouted quinoa

MOJO Trail Mix – Energy on the Go!

Scroll to the bottom to view the video!

It’s the age old dilemma – you are out and about getting things done like a busy bee, feel a mid – afternoon crash, and while filling up at the gas station you look for a quick boost of energy.  What do you do?

Many of us (and up until 10 years ago, myself included) will reach for a Snickers, Kit Kat, or something else from the gas station shelves to get a quick boost and satisfy the craving.   And it works, just not for very long – after half an hour or so you end up feeling worse off than before.

This is predictable because 95% of anything found at the gas station these days has little to no nutritional value whatsoever.  They are designed for immediate satisfaction, and while feeding the taste buds, they do nothing to do to feed the body.

Luckily I have made a trail mix that I am excited to share with you – MOJO!  It contains some very powerful superfoods that you can take with you wherever you go so that the next time you feel a downturn in energy, a handful of the trail mix will sustain you until your next meal.

Here’s the simple Mojo Trail Mix Recipe:

  • Almonds
  • Pecans
  • Cacao Beans
  • Dry Cherries
  • Goji Berries

Flourless Hemp Peanut Butter Cookies

Sweet, scrumptious, delectable, mouth watering, I can’t believe they are healthy cookies. That is what I should have called these cookies. My “Flourless Hemp Peanut Butter Cookies” were my own little secret until I started to take them on the road with me to offer others. The word is out! One bite and you will be hooked. Not a bad thing when each bite is a healthy does of protein and fibre.

Hemp seeds are my favorite food and I use them as my multi-vitamin because they contain so many vital nutrients the body requires. These nutrients include protein, essential fatty acids, fibre, iron, vitamin E and so much more. Just add a few tablespoons to every meal you eat and enjoy a boost to your health.

Ingredients

1 cup of hemp seeds
1/4 cup raw cane sugar
2 organic eggs
1 cup all natural peanut butter

1/4 cup organic chocolate chips

How to Prepare

Mix together all ingredients in a large bowl. Spoon out small ball size portions and flatten onto parchment paper with a fork. Cook in oven at 350 until golden brown, 10-15 minutes. So tasty and so nutritious, even kids love them!

Banana Flax Jacks

Bananas, whole grain flour, flax seeds and pure maple syrup are just what the doctor ordered to start your day. Do you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning? what about struggling to stay awake at school or at the office? My “Banana Flax Jacks” are an amazing boost of energy and a great way to keep you rocking all day long. This simple recipe will have you and your family feeling amazing as you head out the door to live your day.

Flax is the number one source of fibre on the planet. it is for this reason that I chose to add a few teaspoons of ground flax to most of my meals. Fibre is the best way to cleanse the body of unwanted toxins which is crucial to your intestinal health. Make these pancakes for your kids and give them a healthy dose of fibre power.

Ingredients

1/4 cup ground flax seeds
1 tblsp unground flax seeds
1 organic egg
1 cup rice or almond milk
1-1/2 cup whole grain flour
1 tblsp raw cane sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 banana sliced thin
1 tsp cinnamon

How to Prepare

Combine all dry ingredients into one bowl and all wet ingredients into another except the banana. Mix each bowl well. Add all the bowl into the dry bowl and mix together. In a pan, place batter into hand size portions and place a few slices of banana into the top side of the pancake. Cook over medium heat with a little butter until done. Garnish with the rest of the banana slices.
